a wild journal post appears! it is wearing just barely still seasonal santa hat!

For yuletide this year I received A Few Small Repairs (The Walking Dead) by carryokee. Daryl deals with Sophia's death. Coda to episode 2.07.  -- A lovely little look at Daryl, and who he is (consciously and unconsciously) becoming. Also features Daryl's relationship with Carol, in the quiet context of grief and loss and unavoidable, unstoppable change. Thanks again, carryokee! <3

I wrote Open Problem (Push): It’s Cassie who finds the number. In which Cassie and Nick cope with the apparent omniscience of Elizabeth Holmes, and also the many people who want to kill them.

Obligatory yuletide participant adventure, 2011: So I signed up for Push without actually watching the movie. A sure-fire recipe for yuletide-related OH NO BEARS, right? Not so much. That part was totally fine. Actual yuletide-related OH NO BEARS award this time around goes to writing at the airport while waiting for my flight home at six in the morning. I shall find a quiet place to wait and write! I thought. So I did, and then almost missed my flight. HA HA HA. ALL THE HEART FAILURE. To be fair, that one was less to do with what I was doing, and more to do with accidentally thinking that all the passengers boarding a plane takes 0 minutes and then voila you fly, despite logic - and personal experience traveling by plane! - indicating that this is really, really not how that works. At all. (There is a reason I am a little bit paranoid about dates and times. That reason is stuff like this. Folks, I thought I was early.)

Yuletide recs, such as I get to them, are on le pinboard.

THINGS FRUIT FLIES HAVE IN COMMON WITH TYRANNOSAURUS REX:
1. their vision is based on movement
2. ...that's about it

WHAT FRUIT FLIES THINK OF THE DELICIOUS CHERRY CRUMBLE I SET MY FRUIT FLY TRAP WITH:
1. *white noise*

WHY FRUIT FLIES COULD NOT CARE LESS ABOUT MY AWESOME FRUIT FLY TRAP:
1. super intelligent fruit flies of NIMH
2. there is a grape stem in the garbage and
    a) lid security has been breached

But it's all super fine because I am basically made of stealth, which is a very important quality in waging fruit fly warfare.

cleaning out my computer has culminated in trying to go through the two notepad documents that hang out on my desktop and are filled with miscellany. ...except total wordcount is about 24000 and i have suddenly remembered why i never get around to doing this. maybe instead of organizing them, i can just call them journals and then leave them to themselves. that seems very reasonable to me.

next up: dishes, because i am out of plates, and pretending my fritzy internet did not just come back online so as to actually accomplish something. *whistles* and then going to the park for canada day celebrations! there's supposed to be live music and CAKE. :D

This is super cool.

I am very firmly of the belief that there are certain AUs that every fandom should have. Things like "everyone turns into X for no apparent reason whatsoever," or the high school AU (which I don't usually read? but I like knowing is out there), or the musician AU, and MOST OF ALL, the zombie apocalypse AU. There are a whole host of AUs that I love seeing, but every fandom needs a zombie apocalypse AU. They just do.

I hereby propose a subset to the zombie apocalypse AU, wherein there are DANCING ZOMBIES. Wouldn't that just be the most ridiculous and best thing ever? And you dance to blend in, or they notice you and you DIE. And it could be hilarious, or it could be dark and frightening, or it could be BOTH PLUS HYSTERICS. Characters would run into other survivors and swap information about what's being danced where, all "shit man, I heard down in Florida it's nothing but the tango" and "if your square dance is as bad as mine is, don't get caught on the north end."

People would be creeping through a quiet street, not a soul in sight, maybe spying a grocery store that doesn't look nine kinds of ransacked or a car that might still have gas-

And then the beat would start.

:D :D ZOMBIES WITH BOOM BOXES. DO IT, FANDOM.

It's super hot out and today is one of those days where I feel too much like an adult. Obviously the solution is ice cream, except I am basically out of ice cream. Acceptable substitute? Frozen peas. Om nom nom.

I am about to watch State of Play. YAY JAMES MCAVOY TIME.

Every time I post on here I feel like I need to do a fannish orientation post or something, because a) okay yes, usually it has been a while and b) my heart is fickle and no fandom, regardless of quality, can exclusively hold my attention for very long. It's like wanderlust, except with fictional sandboxes.

So. DRIVEBY FANNISH UPDATE TIME. Uh, this is going under a single cut, because all fannish updates are very vague and sans plot spoilers.

Doctor Who, Thor, X-Men )

Also I have now seen two episodes of Mad Men. It is quite good! I'd seen clips on youtube before and knew a whole bunch of stuff about the plot, because that's just how I roll, and never really been that impressed - but this is absolutely a show that needs to be watched more holistically. So much of its most powerful scene are played in this really fabulously understated way, carefully built up throughout an episode to fit both thematically and within multiple character arcs. Meaning only really apparent through context? Sign me up.

That time when you know for sure you commented on an lj entry but you go back and look and you apparently did not, even though you remember typing the thing. Weird, you think, except then while you're skimming through the other comments looking for your own you realize they have all changed, and the ones you remember reading are not there any more. And there are .gif spam comments where there weren't any before.

...Because, like, I would totally have remembered a comment .gif spam if there had been one, right? I didn't just make up third-party internet interaction, right?

I don't even know. Possible explanations include: spending too much time on the x-men kink meme, where the sheer volume of EPIC ANGST and emotional investment of ALL THE FEELINGS have rotted out key parts of my mental facilities.

1. Have discovered tumblr. It is made of pretty things and really specific tags and unadulterated enthusiasm and I kind of love it lots and lots.

2. Have discovered nail polish. I just painted my nails a very lovely blue, because my awesome roommate has a little nail polish collection going on, but I think I am going to have to go buy my own. Because I want more blues! And maybe also a light purple? *hands* Oh the possibilities.

3. Finally remembered that I had saved some songs on stereomood that I hadn't ever gotten around to acquiring for my itunes. And some of them I still really like? But there were songs I really loved a few months ago that just aren't doing it for me now. Huh. Basically everything on there was music that I liked writing essays to, and that's- really not what I'm doing now.

This piano cover for Where Is My Mind (The Pixies) is still gorgeous, though.

4. Saw Thor. I went all by myself! which I had never done before, but which was a good time. I actually have loads and loads of thoughts about Thor, comic-book movies, archetypes, tone, 'the gritty reboot,' Marvel, alternate universes, destiny, the upcoming Avengers movie, and TOM HIDDLESTON'S FACE. (I walked out of the theater and the entire way to the bus I was like NERDS, TO MEEEEEEEE because this is a movie that NEEDS TO BE DISCUSSED but alas did not immediately stumble upon a group of folks wearing threadless T-shirts and talking about comics.) Luckily I have access to a [personal profile] pollyrepeat (who is the most enabling enabler to ever enable but is at least responsible about it and available for very flaily phone calls afterward) and the aforementioned awesome roommate and so I did not burst.

I am currently waist-deep in all the Thor fic the internets have to offer me, and dreading the day when I run out of it. /o\

5. ...I don't have a 5. Um. Yesterday I watched Star Trek and it was awesome? And there were a million million lens flares, oh my word. Once you start noticing them, you can't stop.

Yesterday I watched The Hurt Locker. I can't believe it took me so long to get around to it - this movie is right up my alley. (That is, the 'war movies are super interesting and look relationships under pressure and also stuff blows up!' alley.) I really liked it quite a lot - definitely one I would watch again. I liked all of the three main guys, but found James fascinating. Unsurprisingly, this ends in a zombie AU. )

Aaaaand (very) brief talk of The Avengers movie cast. )
